World Population Day – A day to focus on the urgency and awareness of global population issues. This is an annual event, observed on 11 July every year. In 1989, Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme established this event. It was inspired by the public interest when the global population reached 5 Billion on July 11, 1987.
History
It is an international level awareness campaign being celebrated all over the world to let people know the reason for the exploding population year by year. This great awareness event was initiated to bring about a revolution in controlling population globally, as well as for the people to pay their attention and to help in combating population issue.
Why World Population Day is celebrated
The Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme is paying great attention towards the health problems of the community people. Further, it has been noticed that the death of pregnant women worldwide is increasing and around 800 women are dying daily while giving birth to a baby.
Through this awareness campaign, people are encouraged to take part in the events to know about the population issues like importance of family planning towards the increasing population, child marriage, gender equality, maternal and baby health, human rights, poverty, right to health, sexuality education, reproductive health, adolescent pregnancy, girl child education, sexually transmitted infections and so many.
Objectives of celebrating the world population day!
- To educate people to remove the gender stereotypes from the society.
- To empower and protect youths of both gender like girls and boys.
- To offer them a detailed knowledge about the sexuality and delay in marriages till they are able to understand their responsibilities.
- To educate youth to avoid unwanted pregnancies by using reasonable and youth friendly measures.
- Educate them about the premature pregnancy related illnesses and to raise the public awareness about dangers of early childbirth.
- Educate them about the STD (sexually transmitted diseases) so as to prevent from various infections.
- To make them aware about equal primary education for both girls and boys.
How World Population Day is celebrated
On this day, variety of activities and events are organized on an international level to draw attention of the masses to work together on the issues of growing population. Some of the activities include educational information sessions, debates, artwork, speeches, workshops, poster distribution, and sports activity.
These are some of the activities conducted to raise awareness about the growing population. Also many health organizations and population divisions are working together to solve population problems by organizing conferences, research works, meetings, project analysis etc.
