International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking or anti-drug day is observed on 26 June to strengthen global action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. It is one of the most serious health problems which also causes diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis.

To fight against the substance abuse as well as the unlawful trade of drugs this day aims to raise awareness against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. It was first observed by the UN General Assembly in 1987.

It is an initiative to increase the support for prevention of the drug use by children, youth as well as adults. The first priority is children and youth so that we can help them grow healthy and safe and be responsible global citizens.

The Theme of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2019

This year’s theme of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is decided by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The 2019 theme is ‘health for justice, justice for health’ – underlining the importance of a holistic approach involving human rights, criminal justice, health, and social service institution

According to World Drug Report 2017, released by (UNODC) United Nations on Drugs and Crime about a billion people used drugs at least once in 2015 and 0.6 percent of that global adult population were suffering from drug use disorders, including dependency

How Can You Contribute on this Day?

These are the things you can do to make this awareness day a success.

  • Make use of the internet and social media to share how bad drug abuse is for health. This would help people who are abusing the substances and motivate them to quit.
  • You should help people around you who are dealing with drug addiction. Taking them to a rehab centre will help them come out of the addiction cycle.
  • Visit a nearby rehabilitation centre and help people get out of their problems by delivering a small yet motivating speech.
  • Any person in your family or friend circle, who has problems with a drug addiction should be encouraged to give up drugs. It is in YOUR hands to help them out and show them the right path.
  • Most importantly, trafficking of drugs should be stopped. Spread the word about Drug Trafficking to your peers and help them understand why it is so bad.
  • Lastly, if you are a drug abuser yourself, give up on drugs and make sure you start fresh to live a healthier life.
