Just two years old, Baby Basomingera Ineza Kaelle from Rwanda was not growing as well as she should be. She had been hospitalized frequently due to chest infections, and mild diaphoresis condition. In fact, she was first hospitalized when she was 5 months and 4 days for bronchiolitis i.e. mild lung infection.

Baby Basomingera’s mother was in great distress and hence she left a message on the Help to Heal portal seeking information on treatment available for her daughter’s condition. Ms. Indira, our patient coordinator got in touch with her and they exchanged detailed information on the medical condition of the baby. She sent all the medical reports through mail.

Ms. Indira referred the case to Dr. Sushil Azad, Peadiatric Cardiac Doctor at the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Delhi. Dr. Sushil suggested PDA Device Closure surgery that would help the baby to recover well and fast.

This congenital heart condition results in irregular blood flow within the heart which in turn along with the lungs work extra hard to function normally resulting in slow growth and recurring illnesses. In general, the patent duct arteriosus closes after birth. But in rare cases and premature babies, it does happen leading them to congenital heart complications. Hence, it is advisable to PDA device closure when the babies are quite small and can heal faster. The PDA closure is done using a device which is inserted within the heart of the body and closing the artery

Baby Basomingera’s mother agreed to travel to India and hence Ms. Indira processed their travel papers promptly. She organized the visa invitation letter, medical e-visa, tickets along with host of concierge services that she would require once they land in India.  Finally, they arrived in India on January 3, 2020.

As planned, Baby Basomingera underwent a fresh round of medical tests and investigations. Once they were cleared, she underwent a successful PDA Device Closure surgery. She recovered well and after a week or so, she looked healthy. In fact, she gained some weight as well.

After a fortnight of her arrival and the surgery, she was declared fit to return home to Rwanda. Hence, they returned home on January 18th, 2020. Of course, Baby Basomingera’s mother and her family back in Rwanda expressed great relief and happiness seeing their baby recover well. In fact, they could not believe that their young baby angel would soon lead a normal life.

They extended their gratitude and heartfelt thanks to Ms. Indira and the entire Help to Heal team for their efforts and cooperation for making sure their journey in India was smooth and successful.
